Summer Wellness

Suffering from aches and pains in long car rides and flights? Travelling can be difficult and prolonged sitting can cause severe harm to your body. The NSWC team has you covered with some helpful tips.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • First, treat travelling like any athletic event. Go on a short walk or stretch before departing on your trip. This will warm up and stretch out your muscles, allowing for comfort.
  • Remember The 90° Rule! Sit with each angle of your body at 90° when possible. This means sitting up and not slouching; by doing this you are taking the pressure off of your lower back and distributing your weight.
  • Don’t crank the AC or sit under an airplane vent! While it may be tempting, it is better sit at room temperature or roll down your car windows. The cold air from air conditioning creates tension in your neck and shoulder muscles.
  • If you’re driving: To minimize arm and hand tension hold the steering wheel at approximately 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock; whilst tightening and loosening your grip. Keeping up to date with airbag deployment recommendations, this technique not only allows your arms to rest at a 90° angle, but improves circulation and decreases muscle fatigue.
  • Don’t forget to take breaks while driving. Never underestimate the potential consequences of fatigue to yourself, your passengers and other drivers.
  • Finally, don’t forget to book in for maintenance appointments. If you’re feeling well, we want to keep you that way.
