Osteopathy can provide relief and treatment for a wide range of conditions, with a specific focus on joints, muscles, and the spine. These conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Arthritis
- Muscle and joint pain
- Sciatica
- Headaches
- Tennis and golfer’s elbow
- Postural problems due to pregnancy, sports injury, driving or work strain
- Digestive issues
- Neuralgia
Most osteopathic hands-on treatments address mechanical problems of the body, including those due to muscular and joint dysfunctions. Manipulations target fascia (connective tissue), major muscle groups, joints, tendons and ligaments. Techniques include stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance, known as osteopathic manipulative medicine.
By performing targeted manipulations, many patients are able to move or exercise more easily, experience less pain, breathe better, see improvements in sleep quality, and go about normal day-to-day activities with less interference from symptoms.
Osteopaths take a whole-body approach to healthcare, not only concentrating on the problem area, but instead using manual techniques to balance all the body’s systems, and to provide overall good health and well being.
What to expect at your appointment:
You may be asked to demonstrate simple stretches and movements to help your practitioner make an assessment of your posture and mobility. They will also assess the health of the joints, ligaments, and tissues, using a highly trained technique of touch known as palpation.
From here, they will propose a treatment plan to meet your needs!
