Dr. Brad Matthews – Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Philosophy

In China, it is customary to integrate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and conventional Western medicine in order to restore health in a patient. Dr. Brad Matthews firmly supports an integrated and comprehensive approach to healing, which is what drew him to the team philosophy of the North Shore Wellness Centre.

Dr. Brad Matthews’ expertise is in the treatment of pain due to physical trauma and sports injuries, as well as chronic pain. He has done post-graduate training with well-known TCM Sports Medicine practitioners such as Matt Callison, Whitfield Reeves, and Robert Chu. He is also trained in acupuncture injection therapies, trigger point therapies, biopuncture and mesotherapy. Additionally, he is well experienced with gynecological and menstrual difficulties and menopausal conditions.

Areas of Practice

Dr. Brad Matthews treats a wide variety of conditions, including pain due to physical trauma, as well as chronic pain. He is particularly successful with gynecological and menstrual difficulties and menopausal conditions. Insomnia, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, stress and anxiety, headaches and migraines, and depression are other conditions he is well experienced in treating.

TCM can treat a multitude of health concerns in addition to the above. Diabetes, arthritis, allergies, asthma, nerve or circulation disorders, common colds, and a variety of other conditions, are very successfully treated with Chinese medicine. Treatments may involve only acupuncture, only herbs, a combination of the two, or other modalities of TCM. Available Tuesday through Friday, Dr. Matthews would be pleased to discuss any health concerns you may have.

Therapeutic Background

Dr. Matthews began his formal studies in traditional Chinese medicine in 1996, at the prestigious Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences in Nelson, BC.  His training included four years of full-time study, followed by a four-month internship at two different hospitals in Beijing, China.

Although TCM is many thousands of years old, it continues to evolve. In order to offer the highest level of holistic health-care, Dr. Matthews is continually studying and participating in advanced courses and workshops that explore new developments in this field. He has been a registrant in good standing of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC (CTCMA) since 2001, and has been extensively involved with the regulation of Chinese medicine and the CTCMA since 2003.
Personal History

Dr. Matthews was lucky enough to travel extensively in his early 20s. One of his favourite destinations was Asia, and he developed a keen interest in Eastern culture and philosophy. As his interest grew, he found himself drawn to traditional Chinese philosophies, particularly Taoism and Buddhism.

He continues to have an interest in Taoism and Buddhism, as well as a love of physical exercise. He plays golf and soccer, practices Yoga and Tai Ji (Tai Chi), works out regularly, and gets tremendous satisfaction from helping his patients achieve their own health and wellness goals.
